Demo FPGAs:
Presentation on FPGAs:
Juan González, the popular Obijuan, will show us some basic principles of digital electronics, in a practical way, using one of the most advanced platforms: free FPGAs, which are completely changing the world of computing (both hardware and software), as they allow “synthesizing” digital circuits from their description. This way, they facilitate the combination of the hardware and software worlds, while greatly simplifying the sharing of digital electronics designs, in formats that can be directly implemented in real hardware. Juan will give two presentations:
- “Fun digital electronics with free FPGAs”. Demonstration of the basic principles of digital electronics in a live demo using the free Icestudio tool, which allows us to synthesize hardware very quickly on boards with free FPGAs. Simple examples will be shown that will be synthesized on the Alhambra II board.
- “Free FPGAs: sharing hardware”. Digital electronics is the basis of the digital world we live in. With it, all processors, controllers, and digital chips are designed, which are used to build mobile phones, computers, TVs, tablets, etc. For the first time in history, we have free tools to complete the entire digital design cycle with FPGAs, from the scheme to the generation of the bitstream. This allows us to easily share hardware, synthesize it, modify it, and develop it in community. It’s time to re-make hardware, but free.

Brief bio of the speaker:
- Juan González is an assistant professor at the ETSI of Telecommunications of URJC. Passionate about robotics and free knowledge, fields in which he is known as Obijuan. Juan is a Telecommunications Engineer and Doctor in Robotics. He is a “Maker” by vocation, promoter of the Clone Wars community, the reference community for Spanish makers. He is a strong defender of the free software movement and the new ecosystems that are emerging: free hardware and free culture. His conviction is that sharing is the key to advancing. In 2017, he received the O’Reilly Open Source Award, which is given to people who have stood out for their dedication, innovation, leadership, and contribution to free software.
